Green Your Life!

This week, we were honored to have Jim Simcoe join us to tell us how going green in real estate isn’t just a way to love the environment — going green saves you money and earns you more money when you are selling a house.

By making the homes you sell more energy efficient, you increase the chance that you will sell them at a quicker rate.

Here are some easy ways you can tell homeowners to green up their homes to make them more profitable in your local real estate market:

  • Make sure homes are adequately insulated and sealed off from the outside.
  • In the summer, set your thermostat as high as you can stand it. In the winter, set it as low as you can stand it.
  • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs.
  • Unplug appliances when not in use. Even if you turn them off and leave them plugged in, energy is still being used.
  • Open windows to light rooms naturally. Try to put off turning on electric lights as long as possible.
  • Replace old appliances with new energy efficient ones. (These usually come with rebates from the government!)

  • Install a low-flow shower head.
  • Lower the temperature on your hot water heater.
  • Make sure you have a faucet aerator on each faucet.
  • Fix leaky faucets.
  • Collect rainwater to hydrate your houseplants.

Bottom line: the greener you can make your home, the more likely it is to sell on the market. Every little upgrade helps. Happy greening!
